Future of Christchurch’s Apollo Projects Stadium to be decided

A decision is looming on the future of Christchurch's Apollo Projects Stadium as the city moves on from the temporary venue.

The 17,100-seat stadium, built as a temporary venue following the 2010/2011 earthquakes to replace Lancaster Park, became a fortress for the Crusaders, providing the backdrop for several of their Super Rugby Pacific titles.

But now One NZ Stadium has opened in the city, Christchurch City Council said councillors would discuss the Addington site's future at next week's Policy and Planning Committee.

"The site is currently zoned Open Space Metropolitan Facilities under the Christchurch District Plan, and staff are recommending that the Council asks the Minister to use their special powers under the Resource Management Act to rezone the site to Mixed Use (MUZ)," a council statement read.

"This zoning would provide flexibility in enabling a greater range and scale of activities, including residential activity, open space and other activities ahead of engaging with the wider community."

Council staff also recommended a development plan be prepared which has been informed by public consultation.

"In the meantime, Apollo Projects Stadium and all temporary infrastructure must be removed from the site in accordance with the District Plan."

That process will involve decisions on whether elements of the stadium and associated infrastructure can be repurposed, sold, or disposed of.

An expression of interest and tender documentation for decommissioning the 4.93ha on Jack Hinton Dr was planned be released in mid 2026, the council said.
